Did you know that a staggering 8 million tonnes of plastic waste enters the oceans every year? That’s equivalent to one bin lorry of plastic dumping into the ocean every minute!
Knowing this, we want to make a change. At Stroodles we are not just a straw company, Stroodles is a movement. We are here to help fight plastic waste and straws are just our first channel of choice. That’s why we have launched our #MakeASplash campaign, which will raise awareness of ocean plastic pollution and the devastating impact it is having on our oceans and wildlife.
On the lead up to the G7 Summit in Cornwall this year we’ve partnered up with Clean Ocean Sailing to #MakeASplash in the fight against plastic waste in our oceans. Clean Ocean Sailing are a local Cornish voluntary organisation that dedicate themselves to cleaning our coasts and oceans sustainably under sail. Clean Ocean Sailing’s mission is to collect and record marine rubbish from the beaches, coves and coastline whilst raising awareness about ocean plastics, and we want to help them with this mission. At Stroodles we plan to make a splash against ocean plastic pollution at the G7 summit this year!
The G7 summit at Cornwall this summer
Cornwall will be hosting the G7 summit this June, in the first meeting of world leaders since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The G7 summit will be hosted at Carbis Bay, with neighbouring St. Ives and other areas in Cornwall - including Falmouth - to be hosting international delegates and media.

The UK has also invited leaders from Australia, India and South Korea to attend the Leaders' Summit as guest countries.
What are the key issues for this year’s G7?
The UK government has announced that the focus for this year’s G7 summit will be on global trade, strengthening global response for any future pandemics and tackling climate change. Boris Johnson has said he will ask G7 leaders to “build back better” from the coronavirus pandemic and “create a greener, more prosperous future”.
The G7 summit is such an important platform for change, as it can shape political responses to global challenges. Because of their wealth and power the group is positioned to make things happen around the world!
Stroodles will be at Cornwall this summer
On the lead up to the G7 Summit this year, we have launched our #MakeASplash campaign, which will raise awareness of ocean plastic pollution and the devastating impact it is having on our oceans and wildlife. We’ve partnered up with Clean Ocean Sailing to #MakeASplash in the fight against plastic waste in our oceans.
Clean Ocean Sailing are a local Cornish voluntary organisation that dedicates itself to cleaning our coasts and oceans sustainably under sail, raising awareness about ocean plastic pollution. Based in the idyllic Helford River in Cornwall, Clean Ocean Sailing hold regular beach cleans down the river to the coves inaccessible by land, which are overflowing with plastic waste. They have also restored their 113-year old sailing boat (named Annette) to carry out this mission! Clean Ocean Sailing will sail with Annette around European seas, and with smaller crafts, they will paddle and sail around coastlines and visit small, inaccessible beaches where they collect ocean plastic and rubbish!
To further where they make an impact, this year they are venturing to the Isles of Scilly, and they need your help!
Clean Ocean Sailing have been granted special permission from the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust to access the islands that usually have a year-round ban on human visitation, meaning they will be collecting and documenting plastic found where hardly anyone has ever been.
Their mission is to collect and record marine rubbish from the beaches, coves and coastline whilst raising awareness about ocean plastics. They are expecting to clean up more than 8 tonnes of man-made marine rubbish from the Isles of Scilly, all of which will be sorted, weighed, and recorded, before being brought back to the mainland where it can be properly recycled to ensure it doesn’t end up causing further harm to wildlife.
We are helping Clean Ocean Sailing fight their fight against ocean plastic pollution, a mission that we both share.

Sail Design Competition: Clean Ocean Sailing have restored their sailing boat, Annette, to carry out their important mission and she needs a new sail and your help. This new sail will propel her over thousands of miles for the next 10 to 15 years, enabling Clean Ocean Sailing to reach otherwise inaccessible parts of the coast to clean up. We’re calling on artists with a vision for happy, healthy oceans to submit sail designs for the Clean Ocean Sailing team.
The brief is to submit a piece of visual art reimagining a more sustainable future and an ocean free from plastic pollutants! Submissions can be in any artistic medium but must be submitted digitally by uploading it below.

By donating anything you can and supporting their work, you can help them make a difference by cleaning up this beautiful part of our country, as well as help them to continue spreading the message of plastic pollution while gathering valuable information on the litter that is in our oceans and harming our wildlife. You will also be allowing them to continue with our beach cleans, working with local people and businesses on finding solutions to the problem and keeping the issue of marine litter in the public eye.
For every £2 we will be able to pick up one bag full of plastic rubbish.
For every £10 we will pick up 10 kg of waste
For every £30 we will drag out deadly net from the beach
For every £60 we will collect one dumpy bag full of rubbish washed by the sea
For every £100 we will transport tonne of marine litter under sail to recycling centre.
